When I am engaged to create a piece for someone, I get my inspiration from the people and their environment. I enjoy seeing how even a single piece can transform their home as well as their attitude. My goal is to have each piece exceed the expectations of the client as well as my own. I love the entire process of solving design challenges for others… the interaction, the design process, the construction, the finishing details, and finally, seeing how beautifully the furniture compliments the environment for which it was designed. As a result, my clients have a special piece of art that fulfills a need as well as a piece that will be a treasured possession for many generations. Just as important as the right design is the construction and finish. Proportion and line, wood and color, carving and shaping, are all details I pay close attention to. I use solid wood construction and hand pick every board from sustainable harvested wood. I incorporate a wide variety of woodworking techniques including hand carving, classic joinery (mortise and tenon, dovetails) and choose the appropriate finish for each piece. Before I made my first mortise and tenon, I started carving. I think it was a starting point for me because it was an extension of being a painter in college. Carving and patterns add a dynamic element and reminds the viewer that this was made by hand.
