Simply put, it is the process of using an electric field to move metal ions from a piece of metal to another, overlaying the second metal in a thin layer of a different material. The plating material is the anode and the item to be plated is the cathode _ they are both held in a liquid solution. When direct current is applied to the anode and cathode, metal atoms are oxidized (transferred) into the solution, and then drawn to the cathode, where they form an overlying material on top of the original metal.In essence, the process takes a small amount of one metal and bonds it to another, giving the target metal specific properties that might be desirable in various different settings and operations. About Electroplating Electroplating is an ideal solution for a number of needs. For instance, gold plating ensures that a metal component has better aesthetics, or even better conductivity.
